Berlin as an Eco-Friendly City

Berlin is one of the most environmentally friendly European capitals. Germany really cares about the environment they live in and pays great attention to its protection and living ecologically in harmony with nature. One of the most popular actions introduced in Berlin to protect the air from car exhaust pollution is the Environmental Zone. Vehicles entering the zone should be marked with a special sticker placed on the front windshield, which indicates the pollution group according to Euro standards. Currently, only vehicles with a green sticker (EURO 4 and higher) can enter the zone in Berlin.

Another very important fact is that the vast majority segregates their waste. Berliners recycle up to 65%, so Poles can confidently follow the example of their neighbors. Colorful waste bins can be seen in most public places, such as hotels, campsites, parks, or Christmas markets. Another aspect of waste disposal in Germany is the possibility of returning glass and plastic bottles, as well as cans of drinks. Each supermarket has suitable machines where empty plastic or glass bottles and drink cans should be deposited.

Another way of caring for the environment is through stores that sell food discarded from supermarkets. In Berlin, there’s a store called SIRPLUS, where products with a short expiration date and “ugly” fruits and vegetables end up.
