Litochoro is a scenic town situated at the foot of Mount Olympus. It delights with its beautiful streets, however, it hides many interesting places. This town is often visited by tourists who want to visit the cities, but it is also a stop for the brave ones wanting to conquer the top of Mt. Olympus – Mitikias. But what can we find there?

The flavors of Greece

Food lovers will find themselves in heaven while visiting, because just like so many other towns Litochoro is full of restaurants, taverns and food stalls. One of them is ONE WAY – Fresh Fast Food restaurant, where you can find delicious gyros, as well as a nice atmosphere. The food is prepared on-site with fresh ingredients and the dishes can be eaten at the tables inside or ordered to take away. Prices range from 2.40 to 5.40 euros, however the taste is well worth it. Unfortunately, we cannot eat breakfast here, as the facility is open from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. all week.
Another interesting place to find yourself in. in Litochoro is the Eséssou café, offering a variety of baked goods – ranging from sandwiches and pastries to ice cream and intense coffee. The place is open from 6.00 to 23.00 and the prices are adequate for the quality – from 5 to 19 euros.

Do not err who asks - Maritime Museum in Litochoro

The purpose of the Litochoro Maritime Museum is to search, collect and preserve exhibits connected with the marine history of Litochoro and its role in history. The exhibitions, which introduce the visitors to the seaside history of the town are illustrated with beautiful models. Its main attraction are the two authentic wooden ships displayed for visitors to soo. In the museum we can also find measurement instruments, books, representations of ship bridges and much more.
However, it’s not easy to go there as the museum in open only on Fridays and Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 10:00 to 00:00.

The seat of the Greek gods - what should you know?

The Olimp National Park Information Center is located about a kilometer above Litochoro, directly on the road to the site leading to the peaks, opposite the sports complex. It offers the knowledge in geology, archeology, mythology, monasteries, biology of Mt. Olympus. It shows the multifaceted nature of Greece’s characteristic mountains.

In the central building the exhibition is located on several levels. Additionally to the easy to understand information, we can find many beautiful pictures, fascinating exhibits. films and many other types of media that will help us feel the atmosphere of the mountains.

The first floor features a geological description of Mount Olympus. There, we will learn about the paths and routes leading to the peaks and about the visible and invisible changes that lead the transition from one zone to the next. The next part focuses on mediterranean flora, animals living on the lower parts of the mountain, petrology, climate, as well as archaeological sites found at the foot of Mount Olympus. The following exhibitions include content about the vegetation and animals living in the ecosystem, the springs and caves of Olympus, and the historic sites that were built on the slopes. The next level tells us about boreal forests, its environmental conditions, as well as chasms and caves along with the fauna and flora characteristic for high altitudes. In the alpine part of the exhibition, the conditions at over 2,500 meters are described. The main focus is on the wildflowers found there. On the highest level we will learn about the mythical peaks. At the end there is an exhibition presenting the modern history of inhabitants of Mount Olympus along with the stories of the gods of Greece.

The center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and has a free parking and a free toilet with commodities for disabled people. There is an option of organizing trips with guides who are fluent in many languages, including English. The text of the exhibition is written both in Greek and English, but there are also books in French and German. Drinking and eating are forbidden on the premises of the facility and smoking is strictly prohibited. The place is amazing and worth to explore.
